When choosing the right size Air Conditioner (A/C) for your home, there are a variety of brands and systems available. Size and energy efficiency go hand in hand. It can seem daunting, but understanding the basics will get you on the right track. Hearth & Home has a variety of air conditioning services available.
Why Bigger is Not Always Better
Air conditioners multitask. They perform two jobs to provide you with a comfortable living environment:
An oversized A/C will cool the home much faster, but shuts off prematurely preventing the dehumidifying process to occur. If you want your home to maintain a comfortable humidity level, be sure to insist on a properly sized air conditioner. We live in Florida, not the desert, so this is important. If your contractor tries to sell you a unit solely based on the size of your home, look elsewhere. There are many other factors to consider; among them:
- Age of home
- Type of insulation
- Number and type of windows
- Regional climate
- Sunlight exposure
- And more… We can elaborate in a future article.
Signs of Aging
In addition, an oversized unit will start up and shut down more often throughout the day. This overuse will cost you more in maintenance and repairs and you’ll have to replace it sooner than you anticipated.
No, this is not the latest reality TV show. SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) is a federally rated number based on the cooling capacity of the unit and can be found on the Energy Guide sticker, ranging between 13-26. A higher rating means the A/C will run more efficiently, use less electricity and save you money over time. You’ll need to determine what your budget affords, how long you plan to live in your home, as well as your A/C usage to make the best choice. Energy Star has provided this handy energy savings calculator. At the time of writing this article, the HVAC calculator was being updated.
